Deaf Gain

Joseph Murray

Tor:
Welcome, Joe Murray who is from America and currently live in Norway. He gave a presentation on Deaf Gain. Now I have two questions.
What is Deaf Gain?

Joe:
Take an example, three cups. One has full of water, second has half full and third is empty. People say they want to drink half cup and other full. But they forgot that the empty cup is important which has air. People need air to breathe; it is impossible to escape air around you. You must have air inside of you. Many hearing people see that deaf symbolizes the empty cup without water due deafness. But hearing forgot that deaf has full air known as DEAF GAIN.

Deaf can do what? More visual, see things horizontally and vertically better and they have sign languages. With sign languages, they can communicate far. Sign languages give the world a surprise that they have their own languages. Different surprises are described as Deaf Gain.

Deaf Gain created by Dirksen Bauman and I. We both work together to create more ideas for Deaf Gain.

Tor:
Now you see Deaf Gain. How the process would be like in the future?

Joe:
Now time has changed and we have experienced resistances among deaf people. For instance, resistances against genetic researches or newest technology have impacted negatively toward deaf people, like the oppression of Sign Languages. Can education teaches deaf children sign languages? In different countries, deaf people have their own struggles and most of them have been preventing yet afraid facing negative issues.

Understanding Deaf Gain would help deaf to overcome the barriers and show the world that they can be a positive influence in society. To keep in mind, it is very important in the future that Deaf Gain is spreading to change things for better.

My understanding of teaching deaf knowing that they can't hear nor talk well, it should turn thing around by realizing that deaf has unique advantages. I must support and show them positive of what they can do. They have great visualization. Deaf people at work, most of jobs do not know that deaf can see things effectively. People would want to hire them in work. Deaf people possessed different advantages than hearing that can have a positive future.
